THE STORY BEHIND MY LOVE FOR CLASSIC CARS
Let me tell you about myself, and how after 50+ years I’m making my 17 year old self so proud!
When I was a teen, I grew up in a garage full of classic cars. We didn’t own them, mind you, by my dad Frank was the go to guy in our town Burlington to work on these specialty vehicles. We weren’t far from Milwaukee and my dad was the best resource for big city car collectors so they brought their collectibles to Frank for service. By osmosis, I learned all about automobile – the gears, the engines, the whole shebang. What I loved most behind these machines were the stories, memories, and history they told.
Much later in life, after I sold my businesses and had enough to spend on the things that make me most happy in life (after my wife and kids of course) I started collecting. Now, I want to share the happiness these cars bring with others and that’s why instead of keeping these beauties locked up in my garage, I’m making them available for public admiration at a brand new museum just outside of Madison.
This museum? It’s for my dad Frank and to keep his legacy alive well beyond my years.
HISTORY OF THE 356 PORSCHE
Are you familiar with the very first Porche made? It’s the 356/1, a beautiful roadster in my opinion (and pretty much everyone else!). The vehicle was designed by Erwin Komenda based on ideas from Dr. Ferdinand Porsche. In the end, it was Ferdinand’s son Ferry who actually created it. The first 356 coupes were built in Austria, and, while here in the US we are proudly American and love our American made cars, you can’t deny the awesomeness of the creations by our overseas counterparts. At the very beginning, less than 50 of these aluminum Porsches were made. After the factories were moved to Germany post World-War II, the 356 was reconfigured specifically for racing purposes. This auto has been a hit on the racetracks since!
